The Principle of Elasticity, part I
I had the pleasure of going camping with my 5 year old girl this past weekend. She seemed really intrigued with the idea of sleeping outside in a tent and wanted to try it. I, however, not having ever camped, feel perfectly comfortable in my nice bed surrounded by four temperature controlled walls. However, because I love my daughter more than I love my comfort, I borrowed some gear from a couple of generous friends and took her camping for a night. The date was set, our spot was chosen, a remote location along a river in rural Ohio, and we were brimming with excitement.
Check in time was 3:00 at the park office. We arrived around 3:30, received our map, and were informed that the rural campsites were in a different location, about a 15-20 minute drive through a National Forest Preserve, along a curvy, cliff-laden, narrow road. So narrow in fact, Rebecca asked why there were no lines on the road! As we approached our area, we passed some day campers and fisherman along the river, and then followed the trail back to our spot. Gratefully, we were the only ones there, so we had plenty of choices. Our choice was the most remote, site #25, the last designated site.We pitched our tent in the mouth of the woods, about 30 feet from the parking spot, and proceeded to take a walk along the river.
After a good walk of discovering and praising God for His wonderful creation, we decided to go back to our site and make a fire. This is when I realized camping tip #1. Seeing various advertisements for camp wood along the drive down, the going rate seemed to be $3.50-$4.00 a bundle. However, I spotted a self serve location just a few miles from the park entrance that had 2 bundles for $5.00. Sensing that this was a good deal, we stopped, but a fiver in the tin container, and loaded two bundles in the back of the wagon. Being reminded from a wise friend to bring some paper and matches, I smugly got out the necessary ingredients to start our own personal inferno.
I quickly learned why the wood was a good deal.I have now gone through all the newspaper and have resorted to burning the grocery bag and the cereal box. About the time I was to get out the owners manual from the glove box of the car, in a move of desperation I grab one of the plastic dinner plates and started to fan the fire much more aggressively than the little piece of cardboard I had been using. Leaning hard on prayer and using the principles of combustion, the fire finally begins to burn. Rebecca asked what all the hissing was coming from the fire, and I told her that it was the sound of the tremendous deal we received on the wood- steam.

A Brand New Life, part II
NIV Colossians 3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Wow. A brand new life. Since I was (past tense) raised with Christ, then I have two action steps. First, set my heart on things above (where Christ is) and set my mind on things above (on Christ again). Since I have died, this new life in Christ (the author of life) is ke,kruptai hidden, kept secret, concealed, until the appointed time that He chooses to reveal His glory. Hence, the name of this ministry. Therefore, my role is pretty plain. I have died. Christ, then, is my life. I just need to be determined to set my heart and mind on Christ, the things above. Far above quotas, bills, car repairs, etc., a whole host of earthly things that seem to consume my heart and mind...Help me, Lord, Help me!!
But, knowing that He will appear when He is ready, I say, Marana qa "O' Lord, Come!"

As I am coming up on 10 years of walking with Christ, I find myself wondering what Jesus had, what Paul had. It seems that they had a totally different perspective than I have. Example: Jesus said in John 4:34 "My food is to do the will of My Father and to finish His work...", whereas I think about food all the time and I have a lot of unfinished work. So, since I am a generation behind, I thought I would take my IBM 486 (or Apple 2e for you Mac people) and talk about it, it being what I think Paul had, what Jesus has to give us today. Consider what Paul said under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit:
Consider what Paul said under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit:
NKJ Galatians 2:20 20 "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
NKJ 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
This is a new kind of life, a brand new creation, a completely new category of person. Nothing remains from the fomer life, everything is new. This is totally radical, totally different, totally awesome. A new perspective, a new attitude, a new empowerment for living. This new empowerment, Christ living in me,allowsme to soar above this culture, this time, my besetting sins and totally and completely be alive, by living "in Christ".
