I wonder about all the doors and gates I must go through on a weekly basis. It must be a very large number- some heavy, some flimsy, but all serve a purpose. In one of the numerous I AM pronouncements, Jesus depicts Him as the gate or door of the sheep. A door or gate is a place of transition- from one room to another, from the back yard to the front yard. Since it is a place of transition, you were in one location and after you have gone through this door, this gate, you have transitioned into another location. So it is in the Christian life. Once you meet Jesus, the True Shepherd, you have been transferred into another place.
NLT John 10:7-9 So Jesus explained it to them: "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep…9 Yes, I AM the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.
In Bible times, the shepherds would use a communal pen at night. In the morning, a shepherd would stop and inspect the sheep at the door or gate in order to make sure it was only his sheep leaving the communal pen and entering his pen, for he knew his sheep intimately. We can now come and go freely because we belong to The Shepherd, who purchased our freedom. This transition through the exclusive door of Jesus however, occurred in ages past.
NLT Colossians 1:13-14 For He [Father God] has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of His dear Son, 14 Who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.
If we claim Jesus as our Shepherd, then we were rescued and transferred, because we were purchased and forgiven. All in the past tense. We only have to go through this door once. Inside this Shepherd’s pen is the total supply of all our daily needs whether physical, material, emotional, relational, or spiritual. The picture is one of total security and freedom. All we have to do is recognize His unique voice and go through His gate.
NIV Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
